Thirty years is worth celebrating. And on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, there's no better way to mark three decades than watching a humpback whale breach in Twofold Bay while the streets of Eden come alive with music, markets, and community.
The Eden Whale Festival 2026 runs from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October — and this year's 30th anniversary is set to be the most memorable one yet. For businesses across the Far South Coast, from Eden to Pambula, Merimbula, and Bega, it's also one of the most significant retail weekends of the entire year. Around 3,500 visitors make the journey to Eden each year for the festival, travelling from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and beyond. The Eden Whale Festival began as a modest community celebration of the annual southern migration of humpback whales along the NSW coast. For over 150 years it was the hub of commercial whaling in the country, and the complex, extraordinary story of those whales and the people who hunted them is woven into the town's identity. The festival weekend begins on Friday morning with whale watching cruises on Twofold Bay with local charters Sapphire Coastal Adventures and Freedom Charters, followed by the official opening ceremony at the Eden Killer Whale Museum on Friday afternoon. Saturday is the big day — the street parade along Imlay Street kicks things off, followed by a full programme at the showgrounds with live music, markets showcasing local artisans, food stalls; family entertainment; competitions, including the famous oyster shucking and capstan pull; and fireworks to close the night. Sunday is for exploring — tours of the Davidson Whaling Station, whale watching, beach activities at Asling's Beach, and soaking up everything the broader region has to offer.
Thirty years of that tradition. It means this event has a loyal audience, a national profile, and genuine momentum that keeps growing.
